The difference between acetate eyewear and plastic eyewear?
By Topview Eyewear. Published on Aug 25,2017

Handmade acetate eyewear are very popular in recent years. What is Acetate?  Cellulose acetate is a plant-based plastic that is hypoallergenic. This material was first used for eyewear in the late 1940’s because of brittleness and other problems with previously used plastics. Today’s acetates are known for being strong, lightweight, and flexible. Cellulose acetate also has the widest range for transparency, rich colors, and finishes. More complex acetate eyewear are able to be produced by layering several colors or transparencies in layers and sandwiching them together.

Acetate is one of the different types of plastic, what the difference between acetate eyewear and plastic eyewear?

Plastic eyeframes

Plastic eyeframes are the cheapest to produce, all plastic eyeframes are injection moulded by a machine that heats the plastic until it's molten then squirts it into a precise mould which when the plastic has cooled again, and it’s a plastic frame component produced. Thats the good side of plastic eyeframes –very cheap, high production and easy to produce. The not-so-good side is that plastic eyeframes not so easy for getting beautiful colours into the frame unless its painted on and this creates the possibility of it flaking or wearing off eventually, but they're looks  cheap!

Acetate is a nylon-based plastic (called Cellulose) that is strong, flexible and hypoallergenic. Acetate eyewear have the largest range of transparency, rich colours and finishes as it can be produced by layering several colours or transparencies and laminating them together. Acetate eyewear is then made by combining layers of plastic into large blocks, the individual parts are then cut from it. It is hand polished and finally assembled into a complete eyeframe. Because of the extra work involved, and also the extra colour possibilities, acetate is always used for more expensive eyewear brands, and it’s more expensive than plastic eyeframes.

Lamination acetate eyewear

In a way, acetate is one type of plastic materials. Compared standard plastic eyeframes, acetate eyewear are more durable, and acetate eyeframes are usually good flexibility. And acetate eyewear can be carved out of rich colored patterns on the frames.

Acetate is one of the different types of plastic, but it is different from the regular plastic. The acetate eyewear compared with regular plastic eyeframes, acetate eyewear are more durable than regular plastic eyeframes. Besides, acetate eyewear are lightweight and flexible, which will make people comfortbable to wear. Moreover, acetate eyewear have patterns embedded to them while regular plastic just have the patterns painted on them.

From the material point of view, we can divide frames into acetate eyewear, plastic eyeframes, and the others frmaes such as metal eyewear, titanium eyewear, aluminium eyewear, carbon fiber eyewear and so on, each one is different. Among them, the acetate eyewear have been adding more fashion elements and very popular in recent years.
